Funchal: Making the most of nature's gifts

Funchal, the historic capital is nestled in a natural amphitheatre on the sun-blessed island of Madeira. Discovered in 1418 by a Portuguese explorer who had been blown off course, Madeira name, translated as wood, reflects the rich vegetation of this garden island.
Gonsalves Zarco, the luck explorer, reported home and the island became a target for colonisation with a special focus on the growth of sweet wine grapes that are used in the production of the famous Madeira wine.
Now a tourist destination for the discerning traveller, Funchal's historic centre can be accessed from hotels of luxury that overlook the port city.
The panoramic views on offer from hotel balconies, cable cars and paragliders are not the only use that Funchal finds for the gentle slopes that give the city an air of calm protection.
A famous toboggan ride down the hill is also a thrilling and traditional way to play with gravity. Nature has bestowed many gifts upon this island and visitors are encouraged to take advantage. The sea is a pure blue playground for canoeists, sailors, windsurfers and recreational fishermen.
Less than 20 minutes from the city golfers can play on vibrant greens lined by pine trees with a view of the town are nearby. Within the historic city centre there are all sorts of museums from military and nautical to exhibitions that explain the unique slow and patient process behind wine making.
Funchal airport is nearby and with regular flights to the UK, the peaceful playgrounds and parks of this city are accessible opportunities to unwind.
